Dengue Fever

01 newsletter infectious diseases

Dengue fever is a mosquito-borne viral infection that has garnered increasing attention in recent years due to its global spread. Originating from tropical and subtropical regions, dengue fever can be a serious health concern if not managed properly.

What is Dengue Fever?

Dengue fever is an illness caused by the dengue virus, which is primarily transmitted through the bites of infected female mosquitoes, mainly of the Aedes aegypti species. These mosquitoes thrive in areas with stagnant water and are most active during daylight hours.

Symptoms

The incubation period for dengue fever usually ranges from 4-10 days after being bitten by an infected mosquito. Common symptoms include:

- High fever
- Severe headaches
- Pain behind the eyes
- Fatigue and weakness
- Nausea and vomiting
- Muscle and joint pain
- Skin rash

Diagnosis

Diagnosis is typically based on clinical symptoms and a travel history that suggests possible exposure to dengue virus. Laboratory tests such as dengue NS1 antigen, IgM, and IgG antibody tests can further confirm the diagnosis.

Treatment

There is no specific antiviral treatment for dengue fever. Supportive care is crucial for managing symptoms:

- Rest and hydration are key to recovery.
- Over-the-counter pain relievers like acetaminophen can help alleviate pain and reduce fever.
- Hospitalization may be required in severe cases, especially for dengue hemorrhagic fever or dengue shock syndrome, which can be fatal if not managed promptly.

Prevention

- Use insect repellent containing DEET, picaridin, or oil of lemon eucalyptus.
- Wear long-sleeved shirts and long pants.
- Ensure windows and doors have secure screens to keep mosquitoes out.
- Eliminate stagnant water sources around your home.

Vaccination

There is a vaccine called Dengvaxia that is approved for use in some countries for individuals aged 9-45 who have had a previous dengue infection. However, it is not a standalone solution and should be part of a broader prevention strategy.

Conclusion

Dengue fever is a global health concern that requires vigilance and proactive measures for prevention. Awareness of symptoms, prompt diagnosis, and supportive care are crucial in managing this disease effectively. Always consult a doctor for an accurate diagnosis and appropriate treatment plan.
